Purpose for the Church

Ephesians 3:10-11

The church is a university for the world and the angelic realm.

1 Peter 1:10-12 NIV

What does the world think of the church?

What do you think of the church?

  1. Teach the truths of God’s word

Eph. 4:14 NIV Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of people in their deceitful scheming.

  1. Place of fellowship and encouragement

Hebrews 10:24-25 NIV And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, 25 not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.

  1. Encourage each other to follow Jesus

Romans 12:9-10 TLB  Don’t just pretend that you love others: really love them. Hate what is wrong. Stand on the side of the good. 10 Love each other with brotherly affection and take delight in honoring each other.

  1. Love each other

1 John 3:11 ERV This is the teaching you have heard from the beginning: We must love each other.

  1. It is a place where we see each other being baptized and partaking in communion.

1 Corinthians 11:23-26 ERV The teaching I gave you is the same that I received from the Lord: On the night when the Lord Jesus was handed over to be killed, he took bread 24 and gave thanks for it. Then he divided the bread and said, “This is my body; it is for you. Eat this to remember me.” 25 In the same way, after they ate, Jesus took the cup of wine. He said, “This cup represents the new agreement from God, which begins with my blood sacrifice. When you drink this, do it to remember me.”26 This means that every time you eat this bread and drink this cup, you are telling others about the Lord’s death until he comes again.

  1. It is a place where we pray for one another

Philippians 4:6-7 TLB Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything; tell God your needs, and don’t forget to thank him for his answers. If you do this, you will experience God’s peace, which is far more wonderful than the human mind can understand. His peace will keep your thoughts and your hearts quiet and at rest as you trust in Christ Jesus.

  1. We proclaim to those who come to worship with us that Jesus is Lord

1 Peter 3:15 TLB Your attitude should be the kind that was shown us by Jesus Christ, who, though he was God, did not demand and cling to his rights as God, but laid aside his mighty power and glory, taking the disguise of a slave and becoming like men. And he humbled himself even further, going so far as actually to die a criminal’s death on a cross. Yet it was because of this that God raised him up to the heights of heaven and gave him a name which is above every other name, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee shall bow in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue shall confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

  1. Church is where we can minister to those who are in need in our church family, community, and world
    1. 2 Corinthians 9:12-15 NIV This service that you perform is not only supplying the needs of the Lord’s people but is also overflowing in many expressions of thanks to God. 13 Because of the service by which you have proved yourselves, others will praise God for the obedience that accompanies your confession of the gospel of Christ, and for your generosity in sharing with them and with everyone else. 14 And in their prayers for you their hearts will go out to you, because of the surpassing grace God has given you. 15 Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift!

The mission of the church was given to us by Christ himself:

Matthew 28:19-20 ERV So go and make followers of all people in the world. Baptize them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. 20 Teach them to obey everything that I have told you to do. You can be sure that I will be with you always. I will continue with you until the end of time.”
