The Deposit

Ephesians 1:13-14

  • Man is created in the image of God
    • Gen. 1:26-27 NIV
  • God breathes into him his very life
    • Gen. 2:7 NIV
  • Man becomes a living soul
    • Though we are like the animal kingdom, created by God, man is given a living soul
    • He was created and fashioned after God’s image
      • Splendor
      • Phantom
      • Resemblance
      • Representative figure
      • As a shadow is the outline of the original
      • Man is given the responsibly of watching over and taking care of earth, animals, etc.

God then decides to make women, a helper

  • He makes her from his side
  • To love, to procreate, to help rule
    • They are one flesh
      • Gen. 2:24 NIV
    • They both are named “Adam”
      • Gen. 5:2 NIV

Note: Gen. 2:23 NIV

  • Woman – issa

The Hebrew for woman sounds like the Hebrew for man.

Absolute oneness!

We were still designed to live forever.

  • Gen. 3:22 NIV
  • Our soul lives forever
    • Though our bodies die, we, our soul, lives on

Note: Gen. 35:18 NIV As she breathed her last—for she was dying—she named her son Ben-Oni. But his father named him Benjamin.

  • Soul was departing

Gen. 2:7 NIV Then the Lord God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.

Jer. 38:16 NIV But King Zedekiah swore this oath secretly to Jeremiah: “As surely as the Lord lives, who has given us breath, I will neither kill you nor hand you over to those who want to kill you.”

  • The soul, created by God, is eternal.
  • Because of the fall, we have become lost souls for eternity
  • Lost in that we will not spend eternity with our creator

Is there hope for a lost soul?

Jesus told us that we could find rest for our souls.

  • Matthew 11:29 NIV
    • psyche
    • breath of life
    • living soul
    • that which is life
    • a moral being designed for everlasting life
  1. What changes the destination of a soul?

  • Romans 5:12 NIV
    • Sin came into the world by Adam
  • Romans 6:23 NIV
    • The cost was both spiritual and physical death
  • Colossians 2:13 NIV
    • We were spiritually dead but physically alive
  • Ephesians 2:1 NIV
    • Dead in our sins spiritually
  • Romans 5:8 NIV
    • Jesus came and died for us both physically and spiritually
  • Ephesians 2:5 NIV
    • Jesus makes us alive spiritually

And that act of salvation is sealed and secured by the Holy Spirit whom Jesus promised he would send.

  • John 14:15-20 NIV “If you love me, keep my commands. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever17 the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you. 18 I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. 19 Before long, the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live. 20 On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you.

Paul says in Ephesians 1:13, “having believed”

  • The Holy Spirit is deposited into your life
  • This restores our relationship with God
    • Romans 5:1-8 NIV

Our eternal soul can now be given eternal life with God.

  1. Where will your soul spend eternity?
