Luke 2:21-40

If Jesus is born pure, holy, and without spot or blemish, why did he have to be circumcised?

  • Joseph was fulfilling the Law

The inside story (vs. 25-40)

Q. What was Simeon waiting for?

  • The consolation of Israel – The coming of the Messiah

  • Note: Isa. 40:1-5 NIV 

    • Comfort

      • The Messiah was to be the comforter to Israel

    • Note: Isa. 61:1-2  Luke 4:14-21 

    • Jesus proclaimed himself as the Comforter/Messiah of Israel

The Holy Spirit came upon Simeon

Note Simeon’s statement:

  • Vs. 34 Rise and fall of many in Israel

  • Note: Isa. 8:13-15 NIV 

Many did believe that Jesus was the Comforter/Messiah

  • More did not

Many accepted his teaching and truths

  • More did not

Many believed that he was God in the flesh

  • More did not

Jesus was the sign of God’s eternal love for Israel and mankind.

Many will believe that Jesus died for their sins and rose again for their salvation

  • More did not

John 8:31-47 NIV 

Q. What was Anna doing at the Temple that day?

Most of all, why is Anna’s genealogy in this passage?

Anna spoke of the redemption of Jerusalem

  • God had remembered Israel

  • God was going to redeem them

Luke closes with giving us the assurance that this child did just fine.

  • He grew and developed like any other young man would

  • He grew in wisdom and God’s grace was upon him

We know that between the age of 2 months and 12 years, Jesus was progressing along as any normal human being. 

He was on his way to becoming the Lamb of God who would take away the sins of the world.
